Business Writing Basics

The late management consultant, Peter Drucker said:

“They teach one thing that is perhaps the most valuable for the future employee to know. But very few bother to learn it. This one basic skill is the ability to organize and express ideas in writing and in speaking…The letter, the report or memorandum, the ten-minute presentation to a committee are basic tools of the employee.”

Learning basic business writing benefits an individual, as well as business and industry. We initially saw the need for a Back-to-Basics – Grammar & Spelling course for individuals who needed a refresher of some basic elements of writing, word usage and spelling. This program was offered on an “as needed” basis. We found that some people had challenges around:

  • The use of whose or who’s, affect or effect, your or you’re?, its or it’s?
  • The most frequently misspelled words?
  • Agreement between a Verb and a Subject?

We have expanded the series to include Business Writing Basics. Regardless of what level you are in the organization, knowing how to compose and format basic communication pieces is very important to your success in the workplace. When someone receives a shoddy, unattractive piece of correspondence, their initial negative reaction might be to respond like “Well, if their way of doing business is like their letters, let’s find someone else for our business!” This course focuses on how to write basic Letters, Memos and Emails, and covers:

  • Planning Business Messages
  • Formatting Business Letters, Memos and Emails
  • Tips to Writing Smartly and Professionally
  • Writing Positive and Negative Messages
  • Avoiding Wordy Phrases and Redundant Words, etc.
  • Introduction to Soft Skills

The above is just a sample of what’s included.

These programs are offered on an individual or group basis, can be customized, and would benefit those who are looking for a refresher. We are happy to come to your business place to deliver these programs, or you may opt to participate through our webinar series. Please contact us for details.

After completing the program, participants will be eligible for a ‘Certificate of Participation’. This certificate is not, and MUST not be construed as a college or university accreditation, as the Institute is not a degree-granting institution.
